Photograph of the 1,300 feet long Ever Given that was stuck in Suez Canal. It weighed over 200,000 metric tons.

The photograph of Ever Given shows one of many ways in which globalization (mal)functions. In this course, we will understand what is globalization and how it operates through connections between people, places, and relationships of interdependence. We will focus on colonialism, imperialism, and neoliberalism. Drawing on everyday examples, from the space of home to market, we will examine how different people experience globalization differently.

Using synchronous and asynchronous teaching techniques and a range of pedagogical tools, we will aim to:

  • Gain perspective on key concepts and theories related to globalization, from the lens of political, economic, and cultural geographies.
  • Develop an understanding of different perspectives on globalization.
  • Understand how the lived experience of globalization varies across space and is differentiated by socio-economic vulnerabilities.
